What is OtterTune?

OtterTune was a database tuning service that automated the optimisation of database performance settings. Founded in 2020 as a spin-out from Carnegie Mellon University, it used machine learning research to analyse database workloads and recommend configuration adjustments without requiring manual intervention from database administrators. The tool targeted organisations running PostgreSQL and MySQL databases that wanted to improve performance without deep expertise in database tuning. However, the service ceased operations in 2024 and is no longer available.

Key Features

Automated database configuration analysis

examined existing database settings and workload patterns

Performance recommendations

suggested tuning adjustments based on machine learning models

Multi-database support

worked with PostgreSQL and MySQL instances

Continuous monitoring

tracked database behaviour over time to refine recommendations

Low-touch optimisation

aimed to improve performance without requiring manual database administration expertise

Pros & Cons

Advantages

  • Reduced need for specialist database tuning knowledge
  • Academic research backing from Carnegie Mellon University
  • Offered a freemium pricing model for initial access

Limitations

  • Service is no longer operational as of 2024
  • Limited to specific database systems (PostgreSQL and MySQL only)

Use Cases

Small to mid-sized teams managing databases without dedicated DBAs

Organisations looking to improve query performance automatically

Teams wanting to reduce database resource consumption and costs

Companies seeking to optimise configuration settings based on actual workload patterns
